Many second-home destinations are popular because of outdoor recreation, attracting golfers, skiers, bikers or boaters. Around Lake Tahoe, people with active lifestyles can have it all.
Lake Tahoe is the second-deepest lake in the country, and the area creates its own climate. It is one of the few destinations where residents can snow ski and water ski in the same day — or ski and golf, ski and bike, ski and barbecue. More than a dozen ski resorts ringing the lake consistently get some of the deepest snowfalls in the USA, averaging 600 inches per winter. Long-lasting snow and reliable sunshine — more than three days out of every four — makes Tahoe arguably the world’s best venue for spring skiing, as well as for warm-weather endeavors of every sort.
“My MO is just showing visitors the lifestyle here, and once they see the wakeboarding, skiing, snowmobiling, biking and waterskiing, home ownership becomes the next logical step,” says Tim Lampe, co-owner of Marriner Real Estate. “There is so much within 45 minutes, including the Nevada desert with off-roading, hiking, rock climbing, mountain biking. There are 15 major ski areas within an hour of my house.”
Many of the resorts have been expanding in recent years, adding golf courses, restaurants, shopping and residential development.
Still, the most coveted location is on the lake. Lampe recently sold a waterfront home on three acres he described as “a teardown” for $19.9 million.
