A Fix?

I have written in this blog about one possible way to fix the housing crisis: more immigration to buy up the over supply of housing. Especially, wealthy foreign nationals who would buy condos as second homes. I’m happy to say since I wrote this last fall, we have found a way to finance these non-US borrowers in new Miami condos - it’s working. They buy the condos, put down payments of 50% in ‘foreign direct investment’ into our housing economy. The condos are occupied and the community real estate taxes are paid. These wealthy second home dwellers don’t use our school systems, they do support our retail and local businesses, and they feel a connection to America. A giant win for our economy.

But here’s even a larger solution, that I believe our present Government may be already working toward. If you want more U.S. tax payers (we do), more people to buy up empty houses, people who will open a bank account and participate in our economy… why bring in new immigrants when you already have millions of illegal aliens already here.

These people already have gainful employment (taking our jobs? they already have the ones most of us won’t do), they just don’t pay taxes.  If they were legals, they would have to be paid minimum wage, and therefore those jobs wouldn’t be taken unless they work harder.

They already live in households here, they just aren’t counted, and are NOT paying taxes. They have cash, but many of them send much of it ‘home’ in Western Union transfers, let’s keep it here? Let them keep that cash here and put it in our struggling banking system.

Yes, that’s right, I’m proposing we convert all the present illegal aliens into tax paying US Citizens. Our Government is talking about taxing pot, prostitution and any other vice; all in an effort to increase Government intake. You have to believe that the idea of a few million newly minted tax payers, with full payroll deduct from their now minimum wage checks, is appealing to a Treasury accountant?

What of the additional health care expense? Illegals use the emergency room today for free, could it be that we could lessen this issue by giving them citizenship? I don’t know, just guessing, but most citizens go to doctors not emergency rooms for treatment.

More tax payers, more tax revenue. More Citizens, more stakeholders in the American ideals. As to the point of “but we are rewarding their coming here illegally” - so did a couple of my relatives, it was just 120 years ago… My family has paid a lot U.S. taxes ever since.

Imagine if instantly you found 3 million new tax payers, if each only paid 10% of their income into US Treasuries?

In 1985, at age 16, I was elected to “Boy’s State” where we set up a mock-government. As a Senator, I proposed a law legalizing gambling in Michigan, on Beaver Island. It would have been an Native American Tribal Casino. My goal was to create employment, and raise tax revenue by taxing things that were already happening every Saturday night at Greensky Hill reservation. We were laughed at by the grown-ups. They did not like the idea of a sin tax. It was morally offensive that the Government would wholesale endorse gambling. I argued the lottery already did.

2009, we have millions of illegal residents. Some are on generational residency. Let’s stop pretending like they are already residing here and adjunct-citizens. Let’s tax them like we finally decided to do with Gambling, aka gaming.
